Question #2

Do the members of the Chorus support or reject the power or Oedipus? How do you know?

  1. They almost always either accept the power of Oedipus or they attempt to reason with his power. In the beginning of the tragedy, the chorus almost worships Oedipus, hailing him as a godlike mortal, (total acceptance of his power). But this is a little undermined by the bad circumstances that Thebes is in. The general population in Thebes is suffering and will more willingly turn to someone for help. The chorus does struggle with Tiresias' prophecy but still leaves the king with questionable doubt, "no charge to bring against our king, no cause to attack his fame that rings throughout Thebes - not without proof" (556-558).
