Question #1

Why was the servant resistant to tell Oedipus the truth?

  1. I think that the servant was so resistant to tell Oedipus the truth because he knew the whole story and knew Oedipus would not take it well. Jocasta had given him away and then later married Oedipus and I think that the servant almost wanted to protect Oedipus from the truth because he knew it would ruin him.

  2. I agree with Abby. Also, I think that the shepherd might have been a bit ashamed that he did not follow orders. However, I believe that he is more of a reserved man and wants to keep the secrecy because he knows what horror the truth will bring.

  3. And I agree with these two before me. I think that the only reason he would want to hide the information from Oedipus is because he knew it would cause some fairly large problems. I mean, you can't really just go up to a guy and say "Hey man, you killed your dad, and you're sleeping with your mom." it just doesn't go well. Especially with Oedipus being in a position of power, I think the shepard could have feared punishment if he told Oedipus, purely out of his rage.
